Description
Common tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most popular fleshy fruit in the world. Tomato originated in the New World in the Andean region. The abundant genetic resources, like germplasm or mutants collections, high-density genetic maps (1, 2), efficient transient and stable transformation (3), EST databases (4, 5) and microarrays (6, 7), make tomato an essential model system in the study of fleshy fruits. It is a plant model for analysis of QTL (8, 9), fruit development (10), ripening processes (11, 12, 13), salinity tolerance (14), plant disease (15, 16, 17), carotenoid (18, 19) and cell wall biosynthesis (20, 21,22).
More tomato genetic resources can be found in: * Tomato Genetic Resource Center. The Solanum lycopersicum genome is being sequenced by the International Tomato Genome Sequencing Consortium. See International Tomato Genome Sequencing Project |

Most of the iSolanum lycopersicum/i data has been submitted by the a href="/about/tomato_project/"Tomato Genome Project/a funded by the NSF. Most libraries were generated in the laboratory of Prof. Steven Tanksley at a href="http://www.cornell.edu"Cornell University/a.
